“Deflating the Puffed Up Church” by C.J. Mahaney

Today I went to hear C.J. Mahaney of Sovereign Grace Ministries preach at SBTS chapel from 1 Corinthians 4:6-13.

He dwelled on Paul’s question– “What did you have that you did not receive?”– and highlighted the first effect of grace (he didn’t get to the second), namely, that grace produces humility.

“Why is the Corinthian church different?  The grace of God.  And it is the same with our conversion story.  Why am I different?  Because God graciously chose me.”

“All answers to this question are meant to have a humbling effect.”

“Let’s acknowledge that everything we have is a gift–salvation, sanctification, service, relationships–What do you have that isn’t a gift?”

He then quoted Spurgeon:  “You should not be proud of that which renders you a debtor.  Great believer, you would have been a great sinner had not God made you to differ.”

“Let it be said of every SBTS graduate that they are theologically discerning and discernibly humble.”
