“Why Is Hell Hard to Take Seriously?”

leave a comment »

Here’s a video of John Piper discussing why Hell is hard for us to take seriously.  He mentions the effects of using “hell” as a curse word and skipping over it like it doesn’t matter.  Here are some colloquialisms that I think distract us from the seriousness of Hell:

“What the hell is that?”

“It is hotter than hell in here.” (Nowhere on this planet is as hot as hell is.)

“It’s cold as hell in here.”

“Yeah, I’ll do that when hell freezes over.”

“I want to get out of this hell hole.”

“He ran out of there like a bat out of hell.”

I’m sure you can think of many others.  Piper says in this video that thinking about Hell will either drive a person insane or drive them to the Gospel.  Either way, one ought to take the word “Hell” seriously.
